A year of achievements and challenges

2015 has been full of achievements and challenges; we began this year as a bigger and better business, with a clear mission of what we want to achieve.

The combination of two large businesses has created great strategic value as we expanded our skills, capabilities, geographical presence and customer base. Our customer relations and excellent execution skills have won some remarkable contract awards in 2015, while we have nurtured and enhanced relationships with our existing and potential clients.

We have completed the formal integration process as planned and harmonised many of our policies, procedures and processes, as well as our systems. We have been embedding our new Operating Model within the organisation, including assuring the integral use of our High Value Engineering Centre. Despite the prevailing market conditions in our core oil & gas area, we are on the right track - but there are still areas which we need to address.

We are prepared for the future – we have a strong team of skilled people. I do find it rewarding that when I visit our offices, I sense the united spirit and pride of Amec Foster Wheeler as one business. In addition, we have a clear plan that will help us overcome all obstacles that may come our way due to unfavourable markets - which will remain tougher for even longer.

In the Chinese zodiac, 2016 is the year of the Red Monkey which is associated with competition and challenge. I think we will have plenty of those; however, how we will tackle them will sort the winners from the pack - by being more agile, flexible and responsive, and by delivering excellence on our projects, day in, day out, with no compromise on safety.

I would like to publicly thank each of my 40,000 Amec Foster Wheeler colleagues for their dedication and focus this year and for the teamwork which will see us successfully serve our customers' future needs.

Meet the blogger

Prior to joining Amec Foster Wheeler, Samir was a member of the group executive committee of ABB Ltd., Switzerland, Head of the Power Systems Division and Chairman of ABB Lummus Global, ABB’s international projects and services business. Samir holds an engineering degree, a Master of Science in Thermal Technology from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, and completed the YMP Program at INSEAD in France in 1991. In 2000 he also completed a senior executive programme in Stanford, US and in 2015 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Cranfield University..

Term of office
Samir was appointed Chief Executive on 1 October 2006 and has no fixed term of office. His service contract is terminable on six and twelve months’ notice by him and the company respectively.

External appointments
Samir is a director of the United Kingdom-Japan 21st Century Group and currently sits on the Advisory Board of Stena AB and is an independent non-executive director of Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken AB (SEB). He is co-chair of the UAE-UK Business Council and the UK-Korea Global CEO Forum. He has acted as chair of the World Economic Forum’s Disaster Resource Partnership and is currently co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Infrastructure & Urban Development Industries Committee. He also chaired Offshore Europe in 2011.
